Nigerians have been excluded from the American Visa Lottery beginning from 2015, a decision the US State Department said was because up to 50,000 people from Africa’s most populous nation have benefitted from the scheme in the last five years alone.
Out of 18 countries barred from the scheme on the same ground, Nigeria is the only African country.
Advertisements for the 2015 US lottery have started with several businesses inviting Nigerians to apply.
Applications for the 2015 lottery are expected to start on October 1.
Nigerian Foreign Ministry has not commented on the issue despite repeated demands.
But Jonathan King, the head of the Jonathan King Limited – experts in immigration affairs – told Anadolu Agency he is certain the embargo "will be lifted in the nearest future."
The countries excluded are Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories and Vietnam.
