A non -governmental organisation, Clifford Kidney Foundation International, has organised an essay competition for schools, to create awareness on early detection and prevention of chronic kidney disease.

The essay competition themed “Kidney and my body” awarded Helen Olupounda of Escheal Private School as the winner in the primary school category while Wilfred Obichukwu El-Nathan of Unique Toes Mission School came second.

Meanwhile, in the Junior School category, Olayinka Muslimat of Unique Toes Mission School came first while Abiodun Abigael of Osyglad Comprehensive College came second.

Speaking on the occasion, Convener and President Clifford Kidney Foundation International, Pastor Clifford Umeh, added that the foundation was set to prevent kidney diseases, provide care and treatment for patients across the states.

In a related development, the foundation marked the World Kidney Day, by organising free medical lectures, screening, treatment and drugs for people in Ilogbo Ememi community, Lagos.

He observed that youths are prone to renal failure as a result of anti-social habits such as consumption of adulterated concoctions and involvement in renal hazardous activities that put their kidneys at risk.

According to Clifford, “most of the students ignorantly engage in reckless habits, unaware that drugs and treatment of kidney disease are rarely available in many hospitals and when found are very expensive.”

Special guest and Medical Director, Torial Hospital, Dr. Oluwashina Micheal Lemadoro, took the participants through healthy kidney exercises and symptoms of a damaged kidney.

Speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer, Virtues Marine&freight services Limited and chairman of the event, Dr. Eugene Nweke, said: “I am passionate about the foundation and how we can care for our kidneys and improve our life style.”

Earlier the participants had a walk for life and later were screened by doctors and healthcare givers who gave free consultation, treatment for high blood pressure, blood sugar and welfare to reduce pains, emergencies and untimely death.
