Spanish La Liga side, Villarreal have clinched the Europa League trophy, following victory over Manchester United in the finals. The yellow sub-marines defeated the red devils 11-10 on penalties to claim the first trophy in their club history. Despite not being favourites to win the tie, the Spanish side got the job done against the English side. Manchester United who finished second in the English Premier League were considered as absolute favourites to win the trophy, with club legend Paul Scholes claiming, "Manchester United face a side who finished 7th in La Liga, surely they should come out victorious." However, this was not to be as Villarreal clinched the trophy in a tension-soaked tie.
Former Arsenal coach, Unai Emery has won Villarreal the first trophy in their history. The Spanish head coach is starting a monopoly of the Europa League, having won it 3 times with Spanish side Sevilla. Villarreal despite not being the better team, opened the scoring in the first half, with Gerard Moreno scoring off a set-piece taken by Dani Parejo. The striker capitalised on United's defensive weakness during set-pieces to give the Yellow-Submarines the opener and only goal of the first half. The goal turned out to be Villarreal's only goal scored with the 90' minutes regulation time and 30 minutes extra time.
Manchester United fought their way back into the game in the second half, the red devils scored the equaliser in the 55th minute of the game through top striker, Cavani. The red devils however failed to capitalise on other chances to win the game, with Marcus Rashford missing an obvious opportunity from point blank. The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes regulation time. The 30 minutes extra-time did not do much in deciding the winner of the tie as both teams failed to failed the net, with both goalies coming up big to keep their sides in the game.
The game proceeded to penalties, however the first five penalty takes of both teams converted their spot kicks. The second set of penalty takes also made no mistakes in concerting from the spot. To decide the tie, both goalies were to step up for their penalties; Villarreal's goalie Rulli converted his spot kick, beating De Gea from the spot, however Manchester United's David De Gea failed to beat Rulli from the spot, thus gifting Villarreal the victory and eventual trophy.
