Veteran actress, Joke Silva, has revealed that aside from discipline, reaching for excellence and innovation, one of the things that have helped her 40 year-journey in the movie industry is having a deep knowledge of the Bible.

She stated this during an interactive Instagram session with Adesua Onyenokwe, Omowunmi Akinnifesi and Jola Grace-Emmanuel.

Silva said, “I have been in this industry for 40 years and I feel very ‘cool’ about it. Some of the things that have helped me to be relevant are discipline, skill, reaching for excellence and innovating. I think the last point (innovation) is very important. The world keeps changing and we need to change along with it without losing who we are. Also, I have learnt that one should connect with one’s spirit. As a Christian, know your Bible, and as a Muslim, know your Quran. Being grounded in the spirit is key. The more I study my Bible, the more I see the wisdom in that saying.”

When asked for her definition of success, the thespian said, “The first question is what our definition of success is? Success could be the latest cars, the biggest house and the most expensive jewellery. For me, success is when I don’t have to think about where my next meal is coming from. What’s interesting about this is that I can have so much money in my account and still be worrying about where the next meal would come from. I believe that we should learn to know that our talent is not ours but God-given. Talent is never enough, so one needs to support talent with skills and discipline. You can’t define success with money. As far as I’m concerned, success is being contented with who one is. That’s not saying that you shouldn’t improve on yourself, or that you can’t be the best version of yourself. We should cherish what we have and strive to make the best of it. Success is really about making an impact in one’s world.”

Silva also stated that women needed more time for themselves in order to give their best. She said, “There are many reasons women can be overwhelmed. One of the reasons is that we don’t give ourselves enough ‘me time’. Today’s woman has so much to juggle. Although, women have a lot of duties to perform, we deserve that ‘me time’ to revitalise. Secondly, people like me come from a generation of analogue to digital, there’s so much to keep up with, but it is important that we do so at our own pace. There is no one marking the registers for us.”
