You'd wonder: Who's Joe Arridy? And what made his story so touching?
Joe-Arridys-grave-0856.jpg
Joe Arridy (April 15, 1915 – January 6, 1939) was a mentally disabled 23-year-old who was falsely accused of rape and murder of a 15-year-old schoolgirl in Pueblo, Colorado. He was executed wrongly by the government.

His name, however was cleared over decades later after being acquitted of the crime posthumously.

According to friendsofjoearridy.com, Arridy was born to non-English-speaking immigrants fresh from Syria. A public school principal expelled him after his first year. A professional labeled him “an imbecile with an IQ of 48.” Neighbors viewed him as a pariah. Other children targeted him for bullying. Then a district court judge committed him to a “State Home for Mental Defectives” where he lived during his teenage years.

At age 22, he jumped on a railroad boxcar passing the institution. After that, most of his whereabouts remained unknown – until he was arrested for vagrancy and was coerced into confessing to a horrible rape and axe murder. The real perpetrator had been apprehended and the weapon had been recovered in his home – but he refused to confess to the crime. Then a sheriff claimed that Arridy was with the killer. This “completed” the investigation. Both were convicted and sentenced to death.

On death row, Arridy received amazing amounts of understanding, support and kindness from the warden, guards and even other death row inmates. The warden told reporters repeatedly that “Joe Arridy is the happiest man who ever lived on death row.”

The warden enlisted a famous Denver attorney, Gail Ireland, in the fight for Arridy’s life. The lawyer managed to get at least nine stays -- before the governor called and ordered that Arridy be killed.

Joe Arridy giving his toy train to another inmate before he's taken to the gas chamber. The "Happiest prisoner on death row", an innocent man with an IQ of 46, he used spend his time playing with that train.

Joe Arridy
Joseph Arridy (April 29, 1915 – January 6, 1939) was a young American man known for having been falsely accused, wrongfully convicted, and wrongfully executed for the 1936 rape and murder of Dorothy Drain, a 15-year-old girl in Pueblo, Colorado. He is believed to have made a false confession. Twenty-three years old at the time of his death and known to be severely mentally disabled, Arridy was executed on January 6, 1939.

Also, he asked for ice cream for his last meal. He saved some for after the execution. He had no idea what was going on.

That evening, the warden, Roy Best, and the prison chaplain, Father Albert Schaller, dropped in to prepare Arridy for the journey ahead. Minutes earlier, the Colorado Supreme Court had denied a final petition for a stay of execution by a vote of four to three, and Governor Teller Ammons had ordered Best to proceed with the sentence. Father Schaller told Arridy that he would have to give up his train, but he'd be swapping it for a golden harp.

That was fine with Joe. He doled out his favorite possessions on the spot: the train to another prisoner, a shiny tin plate to Warden Best, a toy auto to the warden's nephew.

...Best, Schaller and Arridy began the slow walk to the gas chamber, located on a hill above the penitentiary. There was no last-minute call for pardon from the governor's office, a call that could have saved the life of Joe Arridy — and saved the State of Colorado from committing one of the most shameful executions in the nation's history.

The call didn't come that night. It wouldn't arrive for another 72 years.

********

In the spring of 1992, a friend sent Robert Perske a copy of "The Clinic," a long out-of-print poem by an obscure poet about a forgotten execution. It began:

The Warden wept before the lethal beans

Were dropped that night in the airless room

The poem went on to describe a doomed man who did not weep, but simply played with his toy train. "The man you kill tonight," the warden writes, "is six years old. He has no idea why he dies."

That poem... Set the ball rolling...

In 2011, Arridy was granted a full and unconditional posthumous pardon. An overwhelming body of evidence indicated that he was innocent, including a coerced and false confession and the likelihood that Arridy wasn’t even in Pueblo at the time of the slaying. “Pardoning Mr. Arridy cannot undo this tragic event in Colorado history. It is in the interests of justice and simple decency, however, to restore his good name,” said Gov. Bill Ritter.

Spot on . You gorrit.

:good:

I can only imagine. It was that poem that sparked the fight for justice posthumously.
