The Amazon founder claims AMI, owner of magazine the National Enquirer, has threatened to publish nude photos of him Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon is rumoured to have had an affair with TV anchor Lauren Sanchez.

Jeff Bezos claims the publisher of American gossip magazine the National Enquirer is attempting to blackmail him over nude photos Mr Bezos published an explosive blog post detailing the revelations Jeff Bezos has claimed the owner of the National Enquirer threatened to publish nude photographs of him if he refused to call off private investigators he had hired.

The Amazon founder and world’s richest man announced his divorce from his wife MacKenzie Bezos last month, shortly before the gossip magazine published intimate text messages between the billionaire and Lauren Sánchez, a former TV anchor. Mr Bezos said he hired private investigators to learn how the magazine had obtained the text messages, a development he claims David Pecker, head of publisher AMI, was “apoplectic” about. Amazon chief exec Jeff Bezos announced his separation from his wife MacKenzie Bezos in January.

He alleged AMI approached him with a verbal threat to publish further text messages and intimate photos of Mr Bezos and Ms Sánchez if he allowed the investigation to continue.

“My lawyers argued that AMI has no right to publish photos since any person holds the copyright to their own photos, and since the photos in themselves don’t add anything newsworthy,”

Mr Bezos wrote in a blog post. “AMI’s claim of newsworthiness is that the photos are necessary to show Amazon shareholders that my business judgment is terrible.” The National Enquirer alleged Mr Bozos had an affair with Lauren Sanchez.

Mr Bezos claimed his ownership of the Washington Post newspaper had made him a political target, and included an email from an AMI lawyer proposing Mr Bezos and his team make a false statement to the press affirming they “have no knowledge or basis for suggesting that AM’s coverage was politically motivated or influenced by political forces.”

AMI recently confessed it had cooperated with the Donald Trump presidential campaign to pay former Playboy model Karen McDougal $150,000 (£115,000) to suppress her account of an alleged affair with the president.

The publisher followed up its verbal threat with an email from its chief content officer Dylan Howard detailing the content of the images, adding: “It would give no editor pleasure to send this email. I hope common sense can prevail — and quickly.” Jeff Bezos said he was prepared to risk potential embarrassment (Photo: Alex Wong/Getty Images) Mr Bezos said he was publishing the confidential emails to demonstrate the “precise details of their extortionate proposal”.

“Any personal embarrassment AMI could cause me takes a back seat because there’s a much more important matter involved here. If in my position I can’t stand up to this kind of extortion, how many people can?” he wrote. “Be assured, no real journalists ever propose anything like what is happening here: ‘I will not report embarrassing information about you if you do X for me. And if you don’t do X quickly, I will report the embarrassing information’.“

“These communications cement AMI’s long-earned reputation for weaponizing journalistic privileges, hiding behind important protections, and ignoring the tenets and purpose of true journalism. Of course I don’t want personal photos published, but I also won’t participate in their well-known practice of blackmail, political favors, political attacks, and corruption. I prefer to stand up, roll this log over, and see what crawls out.”
