Brazilian firefighters found a skull, which might be the oldest human remains discovered in the Americas, while they brought under control the devastating fire that destroyed Brazil’s prestigious National Museum on Tuesday.
After the fire was brought under control, some staff members, with the firefighters’ guidance, started to enter the museum to search for the remaining pieces of their collections. Yet technicians are still evaluating the safety level of entering the building before the large-scale search begins.
“We plan to send in drones to see the situation inside the museum, to see what is left. Then we will add a rainproof cover and launch organized rescue of the relics. I believe we can still save some important documents and artifacts,” said Cristiana Serejo, deputy director of the museum.
Only 10 percent of the 20 million pieces of collections survived the fire, as the museum estimated. The firefighters found a skull in the ruins on Tuesday, which is very likely to be the famed skull of “Luzia”. The fossilized skull of Luzia is the oldest human remains found in the Americas, dating back 12,000 years.
The Brazilian federal government has decided to allocate 10 million Brazil real (about 2.4 million U.S. dollars) to help rebuild the museum.
