COVID-19: Buhari govt gives update on inter-state ban.

The Federal Government has warned Nigerians that the inter-state ban was still in place.

Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SSG, urged security operatives to ensure the enforcement of the ban.

Mustapha, who is the Chairman of the Presidential TaskForce on COVID-19 spoke during Monday’s briefing in Abuja.

According to the PTF Chairman: “We also appeal to the security agents to enforce the ban on interstate travel very strictly.”

The Federal Government had placed a ban on inter-state movement, in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19 across the country.

The ban is likely to be lifted on June 21, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad had disclosed.

1. FG states position on Naira Marley’s concert, reveals plans for attendees.

The Presidential Task Force, PTF, on COVID-19 has expressed displeasure over the concert held by Naira Marley on Saturday in Abuja, despite the ban on large gatherings amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The PTF National Coordinator, Dr. Sani Aliyu, made this known on Monday during the daily COVID-19 briefing.

Aliyu said the singer’s fate will be determined by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, adding that the PTF will support any sanction made against the musician.

He said: “With regards to the fate of Naira Marley, I believe the FCT authorities have already taken action with regards to the chief organizers.

“But the decision on whether or not he will face penalties is actually a decision of the FCT authorities.

“The PTF will always support any measure taken against people who continue to flout the directives we have put in place, particularly if they are putting public health at risk.”

However, the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Chikwe Ihekweazu, while speaking said there are no plans to track those who attended the concert.

He said: “On the plan whether we are going to trace the people that attended that concert, no.

“We have more important work to do than to do that, but if we have a lot of positive cases from that community, then we have a problem.

“We would have a problem if someone that went to that gathering turns positive.

“We hope that doesn’t happen.”

2. Police begin investigation into the killing of medical doctor in Zamfara.

The police in Zamfara has started an investigation into the gruesome killing of a medical doctor, Enoch Okpara, at his residence in Mareri area of Gusau.

Mr Okpara, a consultant Obstetrics/Gynaecologist working at the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau, was found dead and his remains burnt beyond recognition on Saturday.

Shehu Mohammed, the command spokesman, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Gusau.

Mr Mohammed said, “we received the sad report of the gruesome murder of a medical doctor, Enoch Okpara on Saturday afternoon.

“Due to the terrible nature of the killing, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Usman Nagogo, ordered for immediate commencement of investigation into the matter.

“This is with a view to fish out the culprits and bringing them to book,” he said.

Corroborating the incident, Dr Mannir Bature, the Vice Chairman of the state’s chapter of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), told NAN that the deceased was a “quiet gentleman.”

He said Okpara was discovered missing when he did not show up in church on Saturday morning which was unusual of him.

Bature said the church had to contact some of the deceased colleagues who tried his mobile phone number which rang repeatedly without response, thereby raising the alarm that something had gone wrong.

He said that when his colleagues checked the house where the deceased lived alone, as his family was not in Zamfara, his car was seen parked inside the compound and so, drew the attention of the police to check-in.

According to Bature, the burnt body of the deceased was discovered in the courtyard while bloodstains were seen on the walls of the room.

He said that the association would meet on Sunday evening to deliberate on the next line of action.

3. Consider suspending NYSC camps for 2 years, Osinbajo committee tells FG.

The Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC) led by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called on the federal government to consider suspending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp exercises for two years.

In its report presented to President Muhammadu Buhari last week and seen by TheCable, the committee recommended the consideration of suspension of NYSC camps for 24 months.

“The immediate focus in the Education sector is to address the disruptions caused by the pandemic and ensuing social distancing measures at all levels of education,” the report read.

“Practical steps will be taken to minimise disruption to learning, utilising technology as appropriate. Specifically, virtual learning will be implemented (either online or through broadcast), virtual convocation ceremonies or issuance of certificates (with postponed ceremonies) should be implemented to continue educational progression.

“In similar context, consideration will be given to suspending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp Exercises for at least 24 months while allowing deployment to places of primary assignment.

“This will ensure that there is no backlog in the National Service placement pipeline.”

In March, NYSC camps were shut following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in Nigeria.

A statement released by NYSC at the time said “the corps members shall be posted to commence their primary assignments forthwith, while they shall be invited back to the orientation camps when the situation improves”.

Only last week, the scheme submitted a proposal for reopening of its camps nationwide.

It is unclear if the federal government will take this portion of the Economic Sustainability Committee’s recommendation.

The PUNCH learnt that Ajimobi, who is the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress, had been hospitalised since June 2, 2020.

He was said to have been confirmed positive and was managing the situation at home before the illness worsened and he had to go to a hospital.

A source close to the family said the former governor had an underlying ailment which was not unusual for men his age.

He said, “The former governor has been in hospital for two weeks and his condition is not getting better but we are hoping for the best. The irony is that the person whom we believe he contracted the disease from has been discharged.

“However, the former governor has an underlying ailment which is slowing down his recovery. We hope he recovers
