Top Benefits of Studying At A Private University In Nigeria

by Excelsior » December 15th, 2019, 10:22 am

Today, I feel inspired to write on the benefits of studying at a private university in a country like Nigeria. Trust me, there are tons of benefits embedded therein. There are many private universities in Nigeria now - top ones include Achievers University, Owo, among others.

But don't get it twisted, I did not attend a private university. I attended a government-owned university. But each day passing by, and especially after I visited Achievers recently, I wish and desire that I really did attend a private. Well, I studied in a good federal university in the middle belt. And I graduated with good grade: second-class upper. :w:

Now, back to the topic.

TOP BENEFITS OF STUDYING AT A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY
I will present my facts with Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State as a case study. This is one of the few private campuses I have visited.

But before I proceed with the benefits, there's only one thing I must mention: the only thing people consider as the issue with private universities - the high tuition cost. Trust me, I will demystify this issue later in this article: they're not as costly as people say. Let's move on.

Higher cost may imply better quality... Don't you think?
Meanwhile, believe me: like the Yoruba will put it - Obe to dun, owo lo paa! This means to get the best quality in anything, this comes at a cost. Before a soup can be very sweet, money must go in there. It is not surprising that private universities tuition is relatively higher than public schools. The quality requires further investment and also high quality personnel. Get it?

Now, talk of the benefits, below are the top advantages of studying at Nigerian Private Universities like Achievers.

1. TIME ADVANTAGE - YOU GRADUATE FASTER
Time is money my brother! Remember I said I did not graduate from a private university. I was lucky to get admitted to one of the few public universities not affected by too many ASUU, NASU strike, and other form of strikes, riots, ALUTA, and all other factors that could turn a 4-year course to 7-year course. You will agree with me. Before I finished my 4-year course in my public university, I experienced at least 4 ASUU strikes and at least one student ALUTA which cost me months of siting at home doing nothing!

It is traditional in Nigeria that in many public or government-owned tertiary institutions, many factors like strikes will extend your years of study to almost or more than double. But in private universities like Achievers, you graduate as and when due! Yes, if you pass your course and you meet the requirements. Four years is 4 years!

It would be poor decision if you are trying to avoid paying for quality education and you end up studying a 4-year course for 10 years. Your mates in secondary would end up being your employers.

2. SMALLER CLASSES - BETTER INTERACTIVE SESSIONS
After visiting the campus of Achievers University Owo, I was strongly convinced that one of best things about going to a private university is the small class sizes and the engaging, lively learning environment that comes with it. Public universities tend to have big auditoriums and it’s easy for undergraduates to get lost in the large crowd. I remember in my university days, I stood out only because I was brilliant. My lecturers knew me just because I was outspoken. But what about my peers who were shy and introverts but were likely more talented in other areas? They buried their heads down! Lost, maybe never to be discovered. Sad.

Now I firmly believe that students learn faster and progress through the study materials quicker in smaller classes. Not only do Achievers' students get more from their education, but the lecturers feel better equipped to deal with the needs of a classroom by observing and fine-tuning their style of teaching to ensure that everyone, I mean every student is on the same page. How can you achieve that in an auditorium occupied by over 200 students in public? Food for thought.

3. BETTER DISCIPLINE - STUDENTS' MORAL AND SOCIAL PROGRESS
We all agree that the university environment has major role to play as far as the moral and social upbringing of a youngster is concerned. Many undergraduates have had their careers ruined after mixing up with bad gangs that proliferate many large uncontrolled crowds in public tertiary institutions. Cultism, hooliganism, drug abuse, #sexforgrade etc permeate many public campuses. And for a young person who is far from home, the peer pressure and influence are strong.

Before I graduated from my public university, the school witnessed not less than 11 cult-related murders and more bad events. Some of the lecturers of a similar university were also indicted in the recent BBC Africa's s3x-for-mark scandal documentary. This rarely happens in private.

How is the situation in private universities? Better discipline is possible! Not that the students' rights to chose are taken, no. But they are better monitored and given better orientation. This may be made easier by the usually smaller sizes of the population, but which parents wouldn't desire that their children graduate as responsible citizens? Universities like Achievers take discipline serious, while still encouraging good social interaction and mix. You have a campus that is fun-filled and serene and lively. And the graduates come out as better citizens.

4. WELL-EQUIPPED - PRACTICAL HANDS-ON SESSIONS
Private Universities are usually well equipped - else they won't get approval of the NUC. Privates take quality serious and invest in the quality of both the education delivery and also the quality of living. The classes are equipped with the necessary equipment and other tools that will make learning top-notch. From learning aids to practical tools, private is the way to go. Interact with these students and see the differences.

5. HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT - HYGIENIC LIVING
I'm not saying public schools are not neat but in comparison, the privates due to their smaller sizes tend to find it easier to ensure everything is working fine - from water closets to hostel beds to bathrooms to cafeteria - high quality of living is guaranteed. You find class and standards. Some are similar to studying abroad. The standard is there.

Other benefits include the following:

1. NOT REALLY THAT COSTLY.
PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES are more affordable than what you've been told. For example, you can take a look at the course fees at Achievers University here. The "high price" of private universities is is usually exaggerated.

2. YOU WON'T GET LOST.
You will not get lost in a mob of students. Yes as stated earlier, private universities tend to be smaller, and the classes are smaller, too. Many students prefer a more intimate learning environment as opposed to the stadium-like classrooms of bigger public universities.

3. STUDENTS' VOICES WILL BE HEARD.
With smaller classes, students will have a greater chance to contribute to the discussion. They'll have a true dialogue with lecturers, professors and other students both during and after classes.

4. TRUE SUPPORT
They'll have true support. From the academic adviser to the career services office, at private universities undergraduates will find many people who can help them identify and achieve their career goals—and who genuinely care about their future success.

5. THE LECTURERS ARE SOLID!
The lecturers and professors will know their job. Classes and lab sessions are taught by solid lecturers and professors who are solid and who know their stuff.

These are not all. There are many more benefits not mentioned here. You will study in a campus that feels more like home.

Are you a parent of undergraduate who is trying to decide between a private university or public campus? Count the costs. And make a decision you will be proud of later.

Considering all these benefits, you would agree that the long-term and short-term benefits far outweigh the money cost.

Thanks for reading. Please share and comment.
