This
online opinion poll was conducted by Bestnaija.ng in which respondents anonymously share their take on, and rate the performance so far of, the government in Nigeria as regards combating the #Covid19 pandemic. Though the poll is still in the early stage (not so many respondents), we however can see a dominant trend. Below are our findings:
FINDINGS
1. 63% of the respondents believe the federal government is not doing enough to curtail this pandemic in the country
2. 25% think the government has only put forth average performance
3. 13% do not know how to rate the government's performance
4. 0% were confident the authorities are doing great.
LIKELY CONCLUSIONS
For pandemic of this global impact and possible potential reach and effects, average performance is not an option here. Desperate times require desperate measures.
When asked, many citizens strongly opine that the earlier hesitation of the authorities to restrict the borders especially inbound air travels could lead the nation of about 200 million citizens on a pandemic path even worse than that of Italy. That will be scary. As of now, Nigeria has recorded 51 official cases of the virus with 1 death. Unofficial tally gives it over much more cases.
Why such low score for the government?
1. It is possible the populace have low confidence in the authorities
2. Lack of essential infrastructures to combat Covid-19. I mean if China and Italy could have as much loss even with so much tech and infrastructures, how would Nigeria survive?
3. Dilapidated health facilities: It is norm that the rich politicians are fond of traveling abroad for medical services, and abandoning the health facilities in the country. The health system is in bad shape. Imagine Gwagwalada major hospital having only 2 respirators. (We heard one has even been moved to 'unknown location'). Yet, Abuja has over 8 confirmed cases.
4. Bad Information System: Here, we have more fake news than facts. Or rather, a real news can be proven untrue the next day. Or there is bad norm of 'managing information.' This erodes peoples confidence in data circulating in the Africa's largest nation.
All these combined and with many other possible reasons not here mentioned could lead to lack of confidence in the authorities.
ACTION NECESSARY
Yet, its still in the early stage of the pandemic in Nigeria and it is gradually getting too late to take the drastic steps necessary, especially
TOTAL LOCK-DOWN, barring all consequences. For the greater good! Continued hesitation will put the lives of 200 million citizens in jeopardy.
LOCK DOWN NIGERIA NOW!
Enough of the hesitation!
Lets #SHUTDOWNNIGERIA now! #COVID19OUT #COVID19
In the meantime, lets all practice #SocialDistancing, #StayHome, #PersonalHygiene and #GoodNutrition. Together, we can win this war.
