Often, employers and recruiters specify the file format and file name with which all resumes/CVs are expected to be presented. It is imperative to pay critical attention to all job adverts for details such as these. Example:
'How To Apply: Interested candidates are to send their CVs in pdf format to so so e-mail.'
In this case, one of the first criteria used to screen candidates out will be the ability to stick to this simple instruction: In pdf format only!
Possible file formats expected:
The common file formats are
1. Word Documents (.doc and .docx), and
2. Adobe Portable Document File (.pdf)
Note however that where the expected file format is not specified, it is recommended you stick with Word document 2003-2005 format .doc!
Ensure it is .doc and not docx (2007) as not all systems have 2007 Office.
File Name while saving your CV:
It is also common and funny when candidates use funny names to save their CVs. For instance:
mycv.doc, sweetcv.doc, cv.doc, shadecv.doc, chidi.doc.
While these file names are not wrong, they may confuse recruiters especially when they have a lot of CVs to download and work with.
What is the recommended file name?
I recommend saving in this format: FIRSTNAME_SURNAME.doc or .pdf as the case may be.
If your names are Joy Ngbemena, your CV must be saved as JOY_NGBEMENA.doc or .pdf and ensure the upper case.
Putting these in mind will go a long way to present you as someone who can accurately follow instructions and as a professional.
We wish you all good luck!
