Nigeria At AFCON: Did We Stand a Chance At Winning?

Nigeria was one of the many nations that managed to perform extremely well at AFCON 2022. However, despite this, there are still a vast number of people out there that doubt whether or not we even stood a chance at winning.

Whilst this question may seem somewhat negative, it is still worthy of an answer, and with just a little digging and analysis, the answer can be found for anyone with the stomach to look. In this article, we will be taking a look at whether or not Nigeria ever stood a chance of winning AFCON 2022, as well as discussing what events actually led to them dropping out of the competition despite them performing so well.

The Toughest Year Yet
When taking a look at the question of if Nigeria ever had a chance at claiming victory, we first need to talk about the competition they were up against. Of course, if a team is up against vicious competition, then it doesn't matter how good said team is. It is going to be a battle, and of course eventually have to play a strong team in the final

Well, this was precisely the case with AFCON 2022.

All of the teams that competed in this years’ instalment of AFCON truly brought their A-game, and everyone spectating could tell that whoever ended up winning had to bring something special to their game. Even some notoriously dominant teams struggled to make their way through the various stages of AFCON 2022; there were even a few stellar sides that didn't even manage to make it to the knockout stage.

As you may already suspect, this makes things incredibly competitive, and it makes complete sense as to why phenomenal teams akin to Nigeria may have struggled somewhat.

We Still Managed To Do Incredibly Well
If you were one of the people that happened to bet at 10bet Ghana at the time Nigeria was playing, you will already be aware of just how good Nigeria’s odds were going into the game. Moreover, this praise was certainly not unwarranted. Up until the point that Nigeria lost to Tunisia, it would be an understatement to say we were doing incredibly well.

In spite of the rife competition that we mentioned in the previous segment, Nigeria seemed to be one of the few teams that were actually well-equipped enough to deal with the challenge.

There is no debating that Nigeria managed to perform better than the vast majority of other teams in AFCON 2022, and they were certainly looking to be one of the best.

Every Experience Can Teach a Lesson
Even though Nigeria's loss may be seen as a bad thing, this doesn't necessarily have to be the case. In fact, on sites like 10bet Kenya, it seems as though many people believe that their recent loss might actually give them an advantage in their next big competition.

Can you guess the competition which we are referencing? That's right; the FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria competing in the world cup would be a dream come true for most, and due to the fact that this infamous event is waiting for us just around the corner, there is a vocal population out there that believe Nigeria has actually bolstered their chances of winning because of their loss.

Think about it; if Nigeria went on to win AFCON 2022 and breezed through with flying colours, there would be no motivation to improve any further. Moreover, when you factor in some of the legendary nations that are going to be participating in the world cup, it is highly unlikely that Nigeria would be able to get through based on skill alone.

Their recent loss against Tunisia gives a perfect opportunity to see which aspects of performance they can improve as well as to spot any gaps they may have in their defence, and all of this knowledge is going to be crucial if they want a chance at qualifying for the world cup.

Only time will tell whether they manage to utilise this loss to its fullest capabilities. However, if they choose to reflect on their past performance, there is no doubt that they will gain enormous benefit.

So, what is your opinion on the topic?

Do you think that Nigeria could have easily had a shot of taking the title if it weren't for one small slip up, or do you thoroughly believe that they had no real chance of winning throughout the whole competition?

Whichever side you may find yourself on, one thing we can all agree on is just how incredible this years’ AFCON was. Better look next time Nigeria. We will be rooting for you.

Nigeria was not prepared. Whatever happened to the Naija football. So disappointing.
