The one-year NYSC service period is an opportunity to achieve many things. But many graduates waste this year -- in real sense. Many think that getting the NYSC Certificate is enough achievement for 1 whole year. My dear, that's gross underachievement.
If you know how tough the current job market is, and if you know how vehemently robots and AI are taking over and taking away graduate jobs, you would sit back, read this write-up 10 times, apply the points and share with all your friends.
There are some mistakes graduates make during NYSC (National Youths Service Corps Let's mention and x-ray them here.
1. Not Saving During NYSC
I don't expect corpers to save so much. But the thing is while you are on the 'alawee', its just a preparation for what's likely awaiting you out there. You need to start practicing prudency, saving, investment and so on. Experience has shown that many graduates do not get jobs paying as much as the alawee for the first 2 years after service. So, don't waste the 'small' alawee. Its big stuff!
2. Not Getting Additional Qualifications
Some corpers sleep throughout the year. Just relaxing. OH NO!
The 1 year service is golden opportunity to add an additional qualification to your "pali". It cold be as little as Computer Appreciation Skills (much needed now than ever), or NIM or progress in bigger ones like ICAN, ACCA etc. Trust me, you will be happy you did later.
3. Not Getting Additional Skills
Yes, the service year, just like it gives opportunity to acquire more certifications, also gives opportunity to acquire more skills. Grab them. Could be vocational skills, could also be technical, computer etc. Everyone has a skill gap. FILL IT! NOW!
4. Not Networking
Ah! Its a big mistake if you don't know the value of networking even from this stage. Networks make you! You will meet people again. But if you don't build good rapport with the right ones and make good connections, it will affect how far you go in life. So, network!
You can network offline or online. Join good online platforms like Linkedin (international) or Bestnaija.ng Forum (Nigerian Online Forum And Networking Community) where you meet serious minded and like-minded people. You will meet people and opportunities that will impact your life positively.
5. Getting Distracted by Unnecessary Emotional Entanglements
You are free to date. You are mature. But there are some kind of emotional entanglement at this critical planning stage of your life that will do more harm than any good. This is a period to know what you are doing and where you are going! You need to limit all distractions and stay focused. Don't take this lightly.
6. Cutting It Off With Family And Friends
Uh Uh. You think the service year is your escape route from their problems? No now! You need to keep and cherish your family bonds and make them know your are fine, making progress and safe. Keep good contact with parents and siblings. This is no rocket science. Many end up going back to them before a good next step comes up like a good job.
7. Still Depending On Parents, Sponsors For More Money
Many girls are fond of this. Hey, sister, grow up! I'm not saying you can't get money from your SUPER RICH parents while in service, no. You can. But this is the time to start growing up. Stop spending lavishly on useless things. Learn financial intelligence, entrepreneurship, savings, investing etc.
With your little alawee, you can do a lot. Trust me.
8. Having Kids Out Of Wedlock
Hey, excuse me! Even if he promises to marry you, has he put a ring on it? I won't say much! Oo ki n she omode now! You no be small pikin!
9. Joining Bad Associations.
OK, continue. God will see us.
10. Bad Lifestyles
Partying, over-drinking, smoking, all sorts of stuffs will end up ruining your budding career. Stay alert!
