Chelsea breaks 5-year old defensive record

Why are Chelsea suddenly so good defensively? What could have been the reason for it? The victory against Stade Rennais saw them break a 5 year old defensive record that many supporters thought would not be possible.



Before I talk about the record, there are some very important key positions that are worth acknowledging. The first one would be the goalkeeper. In football, he is one of the most important players because he serves the very important purpose of keeping the ball out of the net. A team can only win a match if they do not concede goals and that is why a goalkeeper exists.



Kepa Arrizabalaga has been lacklustre for most of his Chelsea career. He is the most expensive goalkeeper in the world and the expectations for him were very high. Edouard Mendy cost half the price Kepa did and has done a better job so far.



The other position to talk about is the centre back positions. For years, it has been one of the club's most annoying positions. Managers and players have been blamed for the leaks and defensive errors they made and how easy it was for the opposition to bypass it.



It seems like Frank Lampard has found the right formula for that position at the moment. With the addition of Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy, it looks like Chelsea now have a title-challenging defensive unit.



For the first time since 2010, Chelsea have kept 5 clean sheets in 5 consecutive games. It does not seem like much but it is actually very good for the team. It would be interesting to see if they can maintain this record.
