Yes! It’s all over the news. The Nigerian Federal Government has finally decided to take the bull by the horns and do something that will be of benefit to the teeming youth population. The newly unveiled strategy is christened N-POWER. This is an initiative of the social investment programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
N-Power aims to address the perennial problem of youth unemployment in Nigeria by providing massive opportunities for skills acquisition and development. It also aims at filling up the shortfalls in certain sectors of the economy that are lacking in manpower. The programme aims to train each participant with the necessary skills to enable such a person find or create workThe programme is divided into three core areas:
N-Power Teacher Corps: This is a paid volunteering programme lasting 2 years. It targets engaging and training 500,000 young unemployed graduates. Participants are expected to provide teaching, instructional and advisory solutions in the following areas:
a) Agriculture
b) Health
c) Teaching
d) Community Education
2. N-Power Knowledge: This is aimed at building a knowledge based economy, with focus on the technology and creative industries. This is divided into three areas:
a) N-Power Creative
b) N-Power Tech Hardware
c) N-Power Tech Software
This targets 25,000 non graduates
3. N-Power Build: This is a training and certification programme, with focus on the following industries:
a) Building services
b) Construction
c) Built Environment services
d) Utilities
e) Automotive
f) Aluminium and Gas
The target is 75,000 young unemployed Nigerians
What are the application requirements?
This initial phase is targeted towards Nigerians 18-35 years of age
For areas requiring graduates, ‘graduate’ means having a minimum of Higher National Diploma (HND) or a Bachelors Degree from a higher institution
Selection
This will be based on:
expression of genuine interest to any of the available opportunities
passing relevant tests
individual’s willingness to push beyond the comfort zone
ability to show a flair to develop all the skills needed
