About the book

Wisdom was an intelligent university graduate whose ambition was to be an engineer. He was a studious student who never played with his studies. Consequently, he graduated with a First Class Degree, and also received The Best Student Award of the year from his alma mater.
He made serious efforts to secure a job after his university education but to no avail. His problem began when his father, General Doglas Godwin (rtd.) refused to accommodate him and started maltreating him because of his joblessness. This wicked attitude of his father brought frustration to his life, and Wisdom thereupon joined a robbery gang where he met his waterloo and died by firing squad.

Preface

Some parents frustrate and insult their children because they have not succeeded in life, knowing full well that everything good comes from God. Such parents have forgotten that they should contribute positively to their children’s success by praying for them and also by encouraging them. They also forget that tomorrow is pregnant, and no one knows what it will give birth to. It depends on how you impregnated it.
Children are like yam tendrils. They need to be directed rightly and positively by parents as they grow. Parents should be careful and patient with their grown up children because they are easily frustrated and deceived by their peers.
This was exactly what happened to Wisdom. Had it been that his father was patient with him, he would have been alive, and he would have made it in life. He wouldn’t have joined armed robbers and died a shameful death.
I therefore want to use this medium to plead with our present government to create employment for our youths in order to stop their involvement in crime.
Read and be inspired.
Happy reading!
Blessing Chinenye David

CHAPTER ONE
WISDOM’S EDUCATION BECAME A TOP PRIORITY
Doglas Godwin was a retired army general. He hailed from the village called Obiuno. He retired from the army and came back to the village to settle down. Godwin married a beautiful wife whose name was Rita. They were blessed with a baby boy named Wisdom. Wisdom was the only child of General Godwin Doglas and Mrs Rita Doglas.
Sometimes, General Godwin would wear his old military uniform and move round the whole village on his old white man’s horse (bicycle) which made people honour and respect him a lot. Anytime he was on his bicycle, they would be waving at him, calling him “Ahoa Ahoa”. Some young boys would stand at attention and salute him, and he never regretted being an army officer. They saw him as a strong man because he had fought many wars and came back alive. They knew that it was not everybody who fought a war that came back alive, that some of them died in the battlefield.
The villagers respected General Godwin Doglas so much that they gave him an enviable position as a financial secretary of their village.
Unfortunately, General Godwin began to frustrate the entire villagers because of the post that was given to him, and also because of the ego of being an army officer once. General Godwin Douglas acted abrasively and abruptly to the extent that sometimes he would come late to meetings and other crucial appointments, and badge into the midst of the elders in council without according respect or apologizing to anybody, thereby disobeying the rules and regulations of the meeting. One day, to the surprise of everyone, he asked one of the elders to jump like a frog before the elders because he refused to concur with what he said.
His character and attitude became so disgusting and unbearable that the council of elders and the villagers relieved him of his duty as the financial secretary, and suspended him from the age grade as well as cabinet meetings for two good months. He was also ostracized by the villagers. They deserted him and abstained from anything concerning him. They just regarded him as an outcast.
General Godwin Douglas later decided to change from his bad ways, and join them again in all their meetings, but they never gave him back the post of the financial secretary. He apologized to them but to no avail.
General Godwin was not that rich. He was just an average man in the society, but was never troubled about his abject condition, yet he vowed to sponsor his only child Wisdom throughout the university and to any level he wanted to reach, even though it requires borrowing money or selling off all his properties to do that.
He finally stood on that decision because he believed that wisdom was his only hope and the only investment as he always referred to him as “My Investment”.
Wisdom was indeed very intelligent throughout his primary and secondary education. He was one of the best students in the school. He had never joked with his education and that gave his father more confidence in him and he moved on with his decisions so seriously without looking back.
When Wisdom finished his secondary education, he decided to seek admission in one of the universities in the near city. Fortunately to him, he gained admission in one of the best universities to study electronic and electrical engineering. His father and mother were very happy, but there was no money to pay the acceptance fee, school fees and other necessary dues in the school for him to start with his mates.
His father could not bear it. He moved out and started seeking funding here and there for his boy, Wisdom. Wisdom was already becoming stranded as his father continued to wander about looking for where to get monetary help.
At a point, General Godwin decided to visit one of his brothers who lived in the city, and who had made a lot of money. His name was Chris.
Godwin visited Chris and narrated his problems to him but Chris denied him of any help, and tried to discourage him from sending his son to the university. Instead of helping him, he went ahead to advise him that it would be easier and better for him to send his son to a military school or training, than to spend a huge amount of money he knew that he did not have, and at the end of everything, he would end up not getting any job. Chris had three of his children in different universities. His discouragement to his brother Godwin really upset him. He got up and left his house angrily. When he reached the gate, he turned, pointed his right finger at him saying: “With or without your help, I must send my son to the university, stingy man like you.” Chris laughed at him and went inside proudly.
When Godwin got home, his heart sank as he neither ate nor talked to anybody. He thought profusely how he could send his only son to army, fearing that enemies might kill him in the battle field. He knew that Wisdom was very gentle and was not as strong as he was. In spite of all the disappointments and discouragements he experienced from people, he did not give up. Finally, he thought of selling his only piece of land which was the only property he inherited from his late father. He made some useful contacts and after two days, buyers came and bought it from him. Oh! What a determined mind! General Godwin Douglas' passion for education and the strong zeal he had to send his son to school made him give out his only property and everything he had in life in order to train his child in school.
Immediately, he called wisdom and gave him all the money he needed to start school that year. Wisdom was very happy, and without wasting time he started school instantly.

CHAPTER 2
WISDOM’S UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE
Wisdom started his first year in the university with enthusiasm. He was indeed very happy to be in school that year as he would be referred to as an engineer in the next few years to come.
University life was still new to Wisdom, but he continued to get adapted, and he never stopped studying very hard because he knew it was not easy for his father to raise his school fees.
University life was so broad. It was not to be compared with that of secondary school. It took time for Wisdom to make friends.
One day, Wisdom was with one of his study mates called Grace. They were studying under a tree they found conducive. Suddenly, he noticed the shadow of two people which came like a flash on his face, and he looked up and saw two hearty men passing beside them and he said, “This other guy looked exactly like James.” He hurried and ran closer to them and tapped the guy that looked like James. When the guy turned, behold it was James, his cousin brother.
They hugged each other and exchanged greetings. Wisdom was very happy to have a brother like James in the same school.
James introduced the other guy as one of his friends but he looked so tattered and rugged. Wisdom wondered what James could be doing with such a person that looked so irresponsible. From that day, Wisdom and James became very intimate. James pleaded with Wisdom to always help him with his exams. He took time to narrate to Wisdom how he had been facing a lot of difficulties with his exams. According to James, that was why he had been detained in the school till that year. Wisdom had no other option than to accept his proposal by taking his exams for him, since he was his brother and he would want him to graduate as soon as possible.
James started doing very well in his exams which made his friends wonder the source of his exam success, knowing full well that he was a dull brain. James did not hesitate to open up to them and told them how he got “Abraham as a father” in the school. They did not care, but ‘the head of Authority’, Joel who was known as the “the Capon” insisted and demanded that James should take him to Wisdom.
That fateful morning, Wisdom was on his own in a lecture hall of their department studying when he sighted James and one other guy who was very tall and huge through the window. The guy looked as dangerous as the wrestler known as “undertaker”. Wisdom wanted to run away but for the fact that James came with him made him pluck up the courage and stayed. When James came, they exchanged greetings and he introduced the guy as the “Capon”.
Capon took words right out of James’ mouth and told Wisdom his main motive. He talked to Wisdom so sarcastically and rudely which made Wisdom reject his proposal and refused to assist him with his exams, after all he was not an exam writing machine. As Wisdom was still talking, he brought out a small gun and threatened him.
Wisdom started shaking. He closed his eyes and began to plead with him. Then he left with James. Immediately Wisdom noticed that they had gone, he picked up his books and his school bag and ran off like a bear.
When Wisdom was filled with thought, he wondered what could be the meaning of that “Capon”. He also wondered if that was the guy's nickname or the name his parents gave to him because he had never heard such name before.
Wisdom decided to confide in Grace who had been in school for more than a year before he was admitted. Grace told him that “Capon” was the name that cultists gave to their head or leader. Wisdom's heart went inside his stomach as he repeated “cultists!” Immediately he remembered the first day he saw James and the kind of guy he was going with, a lot of things came into his mind and he concluded and said: “So James my cousin brother has joined cultists in this campus, and he never told me, rather he deceitfully turned me into sharing words with those evil people. “Chai! I wish I had known this on time.” Wisdom regretted even knowing who James was and he hated James so much, and yet pretended as if nothing was happening. He succumbed to what the “Capon” had said to save his precious life, because Grace took time to explain to him how dangerous and deadly those people could be. He stopped taking exams for James and started taking for the “Capon”.
Wisdom pretended as if he did not know anything because James might kill him if he noticed that he had known that he was a cultist, believing that he would travel home and tell his father Chris. However, Wisdom continued to play along with them.
Wisdom’s father, General Godwin, continued to parade round the whole village bragging with his son, Wisdom as he called him his investment.
He made sure that he responded positively to his son’s requests as it concerns his educational needs. At a time when he was broke, he visited a micro finance bank in their town to borrow some huge amount of money. He used his only house in which they lived in as collateral. He promised to pay the money back within four years. That was exactly the time Wisdom would graduate from school and he believed that by that time, he might have secured a very good job which would enable him to pay back both the money and the interest.
The final exam was fast approaching, and Wisdom was studying very hard in order to make his parents happy and proud especially his father who had taken a lot of risks to make sure that his son succeeded academically. He avoided distraction and remained focused and serious with his studies.
The long awaited exam had come and gone. Wisdom wrote wonderfully well and he flew home happily. His father was very happy that very soon he would be taken out of poverty and shame by his son, Wisdom. After some months, the result was out but Wisdom was not in school on time to check his result. His friend Grace came before him. Many students gathered at the notice board to check their results. Some went home smiling, while some went home crying. Grace first of all checked Wisdom's result and behold, Wisdom had the best result. He got First Class, and thus surprised everyone in the school. ‘Waaaw!’ Wisdom had finally made it. He was a brain box indeed. His name was ringing like a bell all over the school as the best student of the year. Grace quickly picked up her phone and called Wisdom and told him to hurry up and come to school. When Wisdom arrived, people ran from all angles to welcome and congratulate him. The news about his wonderful result circulated all over the campus. James his cousin brother and the Capon came to congratulate him also. The school authority later called him and gave him an award. Wisdom and his family were really very happy. Wisdom’s father became more proud of him. Wisdom had started preparing for the one year service to his fatherland (NYSC) the next year. ‘Waaaw!’ It was great news

CHAPTER THREE

WISDOM IN SEARCH OF A JOB
After one year, Wisdom came back from the national service and started looking for a job.
Getting a job was indeed very hard for Wisdom, but it was not supposed to be so because he did very well in the university. He got first class which earned him an award from the university. His result was very fantastic, yet he was unable to get a job because there was no vacancy anywhere. He went to all the offices he knew, but all to no avail. At a point, he became tired of everything. He later decided to seek employment in primary and secondary schools as a teacher. To him, it could be easier to get, but there was no vacancy anywhere for him. Each day he went out to look for a job, he would return home frustrated and confused. After many years of graduation from the university, he could not get a job.
Because of Wisdom’s joblessness, his father hated him so much that he saw him as a devil, and didn’t want to accommodate him as his son anymore.
He insulted him anyhow and called him a ‘wasted investment’. Wisdom sobbed everyday like a baby and wished he never attended the university.
Upon all those insults and pains he was undergoing, he never gave up, rather he continued to move around in search of any kind of job even if it was the job of a gate keeper, just for him to earn a living.
Anytime General Godwin remembered the kind of shame and risks he engaged himself in, just to make sure that Wisdom was a graduate, he would lament and hate Wisdom the more. At a point, he stopped feeding Wisdom and said that he was man enough to feed himself. Because of that, Wisdom became more and more frustrated.
One day, Wisdom dressed in corporate menswear - white shirt with black tie, and black trouser coupled with black shoes. He picked his file and courageously went in search of a job again. He went far away from the city close to their village to the city close to their school to know if he would be employed anywhere, but he was not favoured. He was very hungry and tired, and then decided to branch to one of the fast food joints and have some rest.
While Wisdom was resting his back on one of the seats, someone shouted behind him: “the brain boy”. He turned immediately to see the person because that was what people called him in his school. He jumped up from his seat to see the person, and behold it was someone he knew very well - his friend. They exchanged greetings. His friend ordered food and drinks. Wisdom felt as if he was in another world because he had been hungry since morning. As they were eating and drinking, they continued with their discussion. Wisdom sadly told his friend about his misfortune and how hard it had been for him to gain employment.
“Oh boy, this thing is everywhere o” the boy said, “Make we take am easy abeg. No wonder you look so skinny and frustrated”, he continued. “Wisdom please you need to calm down, and believe that there will definitely be a turnaround one day. Do not die before you miss God’s blessings waiting for you, please cheer up.”
Wisdom knew that one day things would change for good, but his father did not understand that fact. He continued to drink and chat with his friend until he drank himself into a stupor.
His friend drove him home and stopped in front of his father’s house and drove off. As he was staggering to move inside their house, his father sighted him from where he was sitting, rushed him and started beating him out of annoyance. While he was beating him, his shirt and his documents tore. His mother ran outside with a great shout which attracted the neigbours to the scene. With the help of the neighbours, she rescued Wisdom from his father. His father was absolutely furious at him. He abused Wisdom, but he could not understand what was happening because he was drunk. He just went inside and slept off.
The next morning, he woke up and found out that his only corporate shirt that he normally wore to search for a job had been torn. He was confused and decided to ask his mother what happened. She took time to explain what happened to him. He was so bitter that his mother could not console him at that moment.
He began to think of what to do in order to raise money to buy another shirt so that he could continue to look for a job because he believed that one day, God would bless him with a good job.
One day, he decided to join a group of bricklayers to learn bricklaying. He wore his father’s old shirt and left for work. When his father came home and could not find his old shirt, he perceived that Wisdom could be wearing it. He dropped everything he was doing and rushed to the site. When he saw Wisdom at the site carrying blocks, he went to him and forcefully collected his shirt from his body, leaving him half naked. He insulted him very well and called him ‘a wasted investment’ and left. Wisdom was ashamed of himself. His fellow workers were surprised at his father’s action and came to console him. One of them ran home and got a shirt for him to wear. They wondered why his father treated him like that.
The worst happened after few days of that incident at the site. Wisdom decided to rest at home. He was sitting at the sit-out with a cup of garri he soaked in water which he was about to drink when he saw a new black Toyota Camry rushing into his father’s compound, blaring very loud hip-up music as if it was a party ground. Immediately the door of the drivers’ side was opened, someone jumped down from the vehicle. Wisdom quickly dropped down the cup of garri on the ground and drew nearer to the vehicle and behold it was James.
“James! James!!” Wisdom screamed, and they exchanged greetings. “James you are now a car owner, stepping on money like this. Oh boy tell me, wetin be your secret, or is it your father’s wealth you’re squandering like this? I don't think that can ever happen because I know my father is far better than your father when it comes to money and giving.”
James asked him, “What do you mean?” “I mean your father is stingy”, replied Wisdom, and they laughed. Wisdom led him inside the sitting room. Unfortunately, Wisdom’s father was returning from their age-grade meeting, and James ran to welcome him. James greeted him and gave him N5,000 as a gift. Wisdom’s father collected the money, thanked him and started abusing Wisdom until he started crying in the presence of his cousin brother, James.
As he was about to go inside, he saw the cup of garri that Wisdom wanted to drink before James came. He carried it and poured it on him, telling him that he was only good at staying at home consuming food. James ran quickly and got water and washed off the garri from his face and eyes. James was dumbfounded about what he saw that day. He wished he could help Wisdom, but knowing the kind of person Wisdom was, he could not let him know the secret of his wealth because Wisdom will never admit to that. James really pitied Wisdom and prayed that he would not die before his time.

CHAPTER FOUR

WISDOM JOINED A GROUP OF ARMED ROBBERS
Grace, Wisdom’s friend had gained employment in a bank and had visited Wisdom to take him along to the city knowing what he was going through in the hands of his father. She believed that if Wisdom stayed in the city, he would have the opportunity to get a good job. Wisdom did not hesitate to prepare his things as Grace was already waiting for him in a cab. When Wisdom was about to leave for the city, he humbly went to his father, knelt down for his father to bless him. His father placed his hand on his head and began to curse him. Wisdom burst into tears until his mother and Grace came and helped him up from the ground and they left for the city.
When Wisdom got to the city, he continued to struggle, searching for any kind of job at all. He remembered the last insult his father gave him which was: “It is a man that takes a woman to the city and not a woman. Wisdom, you are a fool for having allowed a woman to take you to the city.” Wisdom continued to struggle and fight to fit in to the society and to please his father.
Grace had a friend whose name was Kate. Kate had a fiance who was the guy they call "Capon", the leader of a secret cult in the school. That was the guy Wisdom took exams for in the school. Now he was really in the money, he had gone very far financially, and he had money to burn. He was very notable and prominent in the city. Everyone knew him and feared him too because he was a cultist and was also very dangerous.
When Wisdom returned that night, Grace took time to explain to him what was on ground and advised him to go to him for help since he was his friend who he helped with his exams in school. Wisdom admitted to that splendid advice.
The next morning, he did not hesitate to go to the “Capon” whose real name was Anthony Joel. It was really awesome when he reached Capon’s house. He knocked at his gigantic gate. The gate keeper after interrogating him opened the gate and allowed him to go in. Anthony Joel was truly in the money. Wisdom could not believe what he saw there. He was amazed with the things he saw in his compound such as sophisticated buildings, fleet of cars and groups of boys working for him. He was highly respected, and his reputation was never toyed with by anyone.
When he was still looking around in amazement over what he saw, some group of giants came out from nowhere and harassed him by asking him many questions at a time. Wisdom became nervous. He was stammering as he was answering their questions. Immediately Capon saw what was going on through the window and noticed that it was Wisdom, he rushed outside and asked them to allow him to come to him. Anthony could not believe his eyes. He hugged Wisdom passionately as he welcomed him and took him to the sitting room.
“Anthony, na you be this?” Wisdom asked “Abeg wetin be your secret, because I know how we de do exam in school that time. How come you are now in the money like this?” Wisdom asked. He was still surprised and had not agreed to sit down yet.
“Oh boy na long story o. Sit down first” Anthony said. You know say everything no be school, na heart plus connection,” he added. Wisdom concluded in his heart that what he said might be true. As Anthony offered some drinks to him, they continued chatting. Wisdom explained to Anthony the main reason why he came, but Anthony denied him of any help or assistance. He rather decided to show him how to catch fishes instead of giving him just a fish.
Anthony explained to Wisdom what he was doing to get money (robbery), as Wisdom insisted to know how to catch the fishes. Anthony Joel, "the Capon" asked him to go home and think about it.
Anthony was then a top notorious criminal and had a lot of boys (armed robbers) working for him. They worked based on information given to them. Well, it was not really unbelievable to Wisdom because he knew what Anthony Joel could do.
When Wisdom got home, he could neither eat anything nor sleep, but wondered how Anthony Joel could have gone that far as an armed robber.
Wisdom does not have strong heart like Anthony to kill people and collect their properties forcefully, but he remembered the kind of insults and disgrace he had received from his father. He remembered also that the bank was on his father’s neck, and would invade their house and recover their money by all means from them, if they did not pay in the next two months. He also remembered his wretched family and all the shame and insults his father had gone through just to cater for him during his university education. To make his father proud, and to show him that he was not a wasted investment, Wisdom joined the group of armed robbers.
That fateful day, they were called to gather at their normal joint from where they would take off. Wisdom went and joined them, and to his greatest surprise, James his cousin brother was the leader of his own group. He was the one that handed over a new gun to him. Wisdom turned his neck, and to his greatest surprise, his eyes clashed with one of his friends he met in a bar the day he decided to rest after going in search of a job in the city. He was the same person who gave him a lift that same day. Seeing all these people, Wisdom’s mind became stronger and he settled down fearlessly.
When they began operation, Wisdom added his intelligence to it, and consequently, he was very active and Anthony loved him so much for that, and promoted him instantly.

CHAPTER FIVE

WISDOM’S ARREST AND DEATH

After a month and two weeks, Wisdom returned to his father’s house with a very mighty brand-new Honda Element Jeep. His father could not believe it. Wisdom had really turned the wretched status of his family to an enviable one, and paid off all the debts his father owed to the bank and decided to marry Grace.
Grace became his wife, and yet she didn’t know the source of his wealth. She never knew that Anthony Joel was a notorious armed robber because her friend did not explain to her perfectly what he was actually doing before she introduced Wisdom to him.
Wisdom continued to bring huge amount of money every week to the house. Consequently, Grace became very uncomfortable and wondered what could be giving Wisdom such money. But each time she tried to ask him, they would end up in argument and misunderstanding. Wisdom continued to make a lot of investment. He went as far as getting a car for his father. He also sent suitable amount of money to him every week. His father then loved him so much and anchored his ego on him. He was parading around the whole village showing off his new car and sharing his new wealthy experience.
Wisdom was making real money through armed robbery, but he was never happy with his father. Though he pretended always, he hated what he was doing and felt pain each time he came back from robbery operation. Sometimes, he would remember the people he had killed for no reason, and those he had forcefully collected their things. When he remembered all these things, he began to sob like a baby because he was pushed into that. It was not really his intention to hurt anyone, but he had no other option than to make money and make his father proud.
One day, Wisdom and his group went to rob a big bank in the heart of the city. On the process, the policemen on duty opened fire on them and immediately shot two persons dead, while others flew. Information about them was quickly relayed to the other police on duty at the area where they fled to. Because of the tip-off given to them, the policemen ambushed them, killed some of them and captured others. Wisdom was among those captured. They were thoroughly tortured until they mentioned the names of all their group members including their gang leader, Anthony Joel, popularly known as ‘Capon’. They led them to where the Capon and the remaining members were hiding, and they arrested all of them. They were charged with robbery and murder, and thereby remanded in custody.
After five years, death sentence was passed on them. On the day that they would be killed, all the other armed robbers were executed by firing squad. But when it was time for Wisdom to be executed, with heavy tears of regret and remorse, he pleaded with the police to call his wife Grace and his father so that he would say his last word to them. They refused at first, but later called them for him. When his wife came to him, he apologized to her and asked her to remarry, since he would die. But Grace really loved Wisdom so much that she cried to the extent that she asked the policemen to kill her in place of Wisdom, but they pushed her away. Wisdom calmly and humbly called his father to whisper to him in the ear. When his father drew nearer to him, he cut off his ear with his fierce and sharp teeth. He also cried and cursed him bitterly. Wisdom told the people around that his father was the reason why he was going to die shamefully. When he was still talking with tears rolling down his cheeks, the policemen dragged him to the pole, tied him up and shot him in the presence of his parents and his wife Grace. Wisdom died immediately. His wife and his parents could not believe it as they cried profusely. His father pleaded that Wisdom should forgive him. After that, he became sick and was taken to the hospital for treatment. But he could not survive the trauma of his son’s death. He later died at the hospital, leaving behind his lovely wife and Grace, his daughter-in-law. However, Grace later remarried.
What a Sweet Bitter World!
