Nigeria’s film industry has been growing in leaps and bounds over the years, and its reach has even extended into Europe and North America.

The Nigerian film industry — Nollywood — is the third most valuable film industry in the world, behind Hollywood in the U.S. and Bollywood in India.

At a movie set on the outskirts of Nigeria’s capital Abuja, a camera crew is setting up the day’s shoot as actors rehearse their lines.

The movie will be screened in cinemas across the country and beyond.

A lot of time, energy and resources are involved in producing a movie, especially one that deserves global recognition. Nollywood continues to show it’s a major player in the entertainment sector.

According to the World Bank, Nollywood is worth over five billion U.S. dollars.

A romantic comedy “The Wedding Party”, released in 2016, became the first Nigerian flick to break 11.5 million U.S. dollars at the box office.

That’s a significant milestone because of rampant copying of Nollywood films. But new opportunities are coming up.

“The platforms are coming here now. Twentieth Century Fox are having partnerships, Sony’s having partnerships with the Ebony Life’s, the collaborative work with ‘Wedding Party’, which was the film that set all the records. Such collaborations are coming now and exposing us to a bit more of an international and global audience,” said Enyinna Nwigwe, a Nigerian actor and producer best known for roles in movies including “The Wedding Party”.

Despite its recent successes, Nollywood needs greater investment to go further.

“The challenges are there from funding to power supply, to not really having studios, to infrastructure on one hand, but capacity development on the other. We need more training,” said Ishaya Bako, a Nigerian film director and screenwriter.

Film-makers believe the influence of the Hollywood blockbuster “Black Panther” has raised the level of ambition.

“Africa is a continent that eventually, will do a lot of great things around the world, and I think ‘Black Panther’ has been able to channel that direction and give us that hope that there’s something tangible in Africa,” said Bem Pever, a film and TV producer.

If Nollywood is able to attract significant new investment, it holds out the prospect of boosting Nigeria’s economic development.

Little wonder. Did you remember how much FG injected then? Billions.

Other sectors need rescue too.

Helping the entertainment industry and abandoning the real sectors is like giving an injured and bleeding man some dopes and tramadol without attending to his open wounds. While he wont feel the pain he could still die of his injuries.
