In your job hunt, your CV or Resume is your icebreaker. It's the only first chance you have to make a lasting first impression. You either nail it or you fail it. Potential head hunters (employers) may see your Resume and long to see you! And it's possible the employer sees your CV and thrash it automatically. This depends on the content, wordings and formatting - irrespective of your qualifications and grade!
Resume (CV)
Resume (CV)
So how do you nail it one time with your wordings and formatting with just one opportunity? Well, that is the sole purpose of my topic and I will be as brief and cogent as possible. Moreover I wish to lead by example.

WORDINGS:
Your CV or Resume MUST NOT BE GENERIC! Reports from many HR departments reveal that especially in developing nations like Nigeria, over 70% of submitted applications have very generic CVs or Resumes. What does it mean to be generic?

A generic set of Resumes will have the following features:
1. Same Summary Statement - SSS
It's rather disappointing to realise that 7 out of 10 applicants have same professional summary that showcase their outstanding skills et cetera.

2. Same Wordings Style - SWS
Imagine reading about 10 consecutive CVs and they all sound the same!

The solution here is to be unique. It's not bad to work with same template or format. But you must not be too lazy to modify every wording to suit who you really are and outline your unique strengths. Job seekers take note.

Modify and customise the template to make it outstanding and unique and showcase your specific individual skill advantage and talent. If done right, your Resume cannot be the same as or similar to another person's.

FORMATTING
The right formatting refers to the arrangement of the major blocks and categories of your information on the CV or Resume.

There are 5 major blocks or categories which a CV or Resume showcases:

1. Personal/Contact Details - Names, bio data and contact

2. Professional or personal summary - this is the real chance to summarize your uniqueness and special skills and qualities. This is where you nail it most.

3. Academic or Educational qualification and certifications

4. Working experiences

5. References

All these 5 elements have different orders depending on 2 major factors:

1. A fresh graduate or Student
2. An experience job seeker

The major formatting difference is indicated by which one comes next after professional summary - academic qualification or working experiences.

As a fresh graduate with no working experiences, the order must showcase your academic certifications first. That is your major strength and this will be the order:
12345
For experienced employees looking to get another job, your working experience is a great strength you must showcase. And the order shall be:
12435
Why?
The recruiter has just a few seconds to scan through your paper out of numerous load pile of others. And within those few (about 3) seconds if nothing outstanding is found, you know whats next: THRASH CAN!

The learning point is: you make your CV or Resume stand out! To achieve this, concentrate on two major blocks or features:

1. Your professional summary and
2. Either your Academic qualification or Working experiences (depending).

On these 2, what must be prioritised are: relevance, uniqueness and value.

As stated in previous guides here on Bestnaija.com, employers frown at generic profiles; make yours stand out by focusing on your most relevant skills, experience and talents, highlighting the reasons why employers should interview you. Sell yourself using words and phrases that can grab the employers' attention and make you sound like the perfect candidate for the job position.

These two are the indicators. You must nail it! Or you fail it.

This is wishing all our job seekers on Bestnaija the very best!

Godspeed and good luck!
