The House of Representatives by-election in Lokoja/Kotonkarfe federal constituency in Kogi state on Saturday, August 11, was marred by violence as a supporter of the APC was stabbed to death.

The deceased, Yahaya Umoru, was said to have been stabbed to death by a supporter of rival political party, after he resisted attempts by thugs to cart away a ballot box.

The thugs reportedly stormed a polling unit in Lokoja, the state capital, and attempted to forcefully take away the ballot box at the unit.

The APC supporters at the polling unit were said to have mobilised themselves against the plan, leading to the stabbing of Umoru, who was later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital where he was rushed to.

Umoru was a son of an APC House of Assembly aspirant for Lokoja 1 constituency and was said to have been visible for the party throughout the electioneering in the build up to the election.

Reacting to the incident, the Kogi state police command vowed to apprehend the perpetrators of the dastardly act, urging the youth of the area to maintain calm as the long hands of the law will soon catch up with the murderer.
