According to researchers, consuming energy drinks could lead to a constriction of your blood vessels.

Scientists have found that drinking energy drink can trigger heart problems with the effects being felt about 1 hour 30 minutes after consumption.

The consumption of Red Bull and Monster could lead to a narrowing your blood vessels, which can intensify the threat of obstruction leading to heart attacks and strokes.

Lead author Dr John Higgins at the University of Texas in Houston stated that energy drinks are growing in fame and it’s vital to study the effects of these drinks on those who always consume them and to establish if there’s a likely safe pattern of drinking to cut down risks of cardiovascular diseases.

According to the team of researchers, the harmful effect of energy drinks is actually the mixture of items including caffeine, sugar, taurine and other herbal items. These ingredients can be harmful to the lining of veins and arteries.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a basic ingredient in energy drinks. Caffeine is a drug that can fuel stress hormones in the central nervous system. Researchers at University of Arizona have discovered that taking one cup of filter coffee (80mg) can amplify short-term recall and alertness by a third.

According to a study at Helsinki University taking 3 cups of coffee raises blood pressure by 14 points, mounting strain on vital organs. Consuming caffeine excessively like over 5 cups daily
can trigger heart palpitations, headaches, and cardiac arrest.

Taurine

Taurine is a non- essential amino acid used
in fats metabolism. Though taurine eases congestive heart failure and acute hepatitis of the liver, it hasn’t been connected to increasing energy in healthy humans,” says nutritionist Judy Watson. Taurine decreases blood pressure, but studies have indicated it increases the risk of blood clot formation.

Your body breaks carbs to glucose (sugar), for easy absorption into the blood. Glucose can assists physical performance, is unable to improve focus. Consuming glucose can be detrimental to diabetics. Even for healthy individuals who consume glucose in excess quantity, it can cause the body to halt far burning, thereby increasing risks of developing diabetes.

Ginseng

Ginseng is a root extract from panax shrubs which is another ingredient used in producing energy drinks. Ginseng boosts mental function
by harmonizing stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. The amount of Ginseng in energy drinks is considered safe. It comes with little or no side effects when consumed in excess quantity.

Studies on Energy drinks and Heart Attacks
Energy drinks enclose 80mg of caffeine per 100ml, which is approximately comparable to 3 cans of Coke or a cup of instant coffee, according to the Food Standards Agency.

Energy drinks also hold high sugar contents, and are frequently sold in 500ml cans. Studies conducted had established that blood vessels constricted about 90 minutes after consuming an energy drink.

The vessel dilation of a participant before consuming energy drink was 5.1% in diameter using ultrasound measurements. However, the dilation reduced to 2.8% after consuming energy drink.

This result indicates an acute impairment in vascular function, according to the research team.

All the study participants were non-smokers in their 20s, with no earlier health conditions.

Other studies have also established a link between energy drinks and cardiovascular issues.

Reports from a Canadian study established that energy drinks could lead to heart problems and seizures in children.

The risky changes in heartbeat and blood pressure are responsible for emergency room cases of energy drink consumers. People who are hypertensive or have heart rhythm disorders should avoid consuming energy drinks.

Energy drinks consumption has been connected to a number of health-related problems, including heart attack, abnormal heart rhythm, and sudden cardiac arrest. However, it isn’t precisely known how energy drinks triggers increase in health risks.

Another group of researchers were able to track participants’ heart rhythm and blood pressure for four hours after they ingested two different energy drinks and a placebo. They discovered that the two energy drinks considerably augmented blood pressure compared to the control drink.

Medical experts have cautioned people with heart-related conditions to limit their intake of energy drinks.

More research needs to be conducted to examine the long-term health effects of usual energy drink consumption.
