Theresa May on Friday suffered a substantial defeat in a third attempt to pass her Brexit deal through the House of Commons, leading the prime minister to warn that parliament was “reaching its limits” in finding an agreed exit from the EU.

Mrs May sought approval for her draft withdrawal treaty on what had originally been scheduled as Brexit day, but MPs rejected the divorce agreement by 344 votes to 286.

If MPs had approved the treaty, the UK would have left the EU on the revised date of May 22.

But following the latest rejection of Mrs May’s deal, Britain risks leaving the EU on April 12 without a deal unless the prime minister can persuade leaders of the bloc’s 27 other member states to grant a further extension to the Article 50 exit process.

This extension would require the UK to take part in European Parliament elections in May.
