African representatives have applauded the initiative plan announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in his keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) on Monday.

In his speech, Xi declared that China will launch eight major initiatives in close collaboration with African countries in the next three years and beyond. The initiatives will cover areas ranging from industrial promotion, infrastructure connectivity, trade facilitation, green development, capacity building, health care, people-to-people exchanges and peace and security.

“I do think that the eight-point plan announced by President Xi Jinping over the next three years and beyond will really inspire and deepen China-Africa cooperation, really speak within needs [of] Africa today and the needs of China-Africa cooperation going forward. So I really want to commend the president, the government and the people of China for this forward-looking engagement with Africa. I think it’s going to lead to win-win outcomes for both China and Africa,” said Babatunde Ahonsi, representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in China.

Azhari Abdul-Gadir Abdalla, Minister of Petroleum and Gas of Sudan echoed the UNFPA representative’s comments about the eight major initiatives while praising China’s positive attitude and principle of non-interference in Africa.

“I was really impressed with the eight-point [plan] introduced by His Excellence today regarding the future relationship and cooperation between Africa and China,” he said

“I think I’m also impressed and happy with the attitude that China is taking in terms of defining the relationship between Africa and China, in terms of no interferences in the political issues, no interferences in the internal affairs of any of the African countries. I think all of that is great,” he added.

During the 2018 FOCAC Beijing Summit from Monday to Tuesday, more than 50 heads of states and representatives from the United Nations and the African Union gathered for discussions about a better future between China and Africa.
